Cooking for Change

Cooking for Change embodies the essence of second chances—a nonprofit dedicated to catalyzing transformation through food. Originating in 2021, it emerged as the brainchild of John Moultrie, chef-owner of Bistro on the Greens, seizing the pandemic’s silver lining to fulfill a longstanding aspiration: empowering disadvantaged lives through culinary arts.

Catering to individuals aged 16 to 24, this initiative extends its hand to those marginalized or previously incarcerated, navigating adversities such as homelessness, substance dependency, teenage parenthood, and educational setbacks. Despite varied challenges, a shared resolve unites them—they’re determined to rewrite their life stories.

The program, spanning approximately six months, offers comprehensive training in restaurant operations. Participants not only acquire culinary expertise and kitchen safety knowledge but also cultivate invaluable “soft” skills like initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.

Cooking for Change continued

Recognized as a paid internship by WorkOne, this endeavor receives support from the LaPorte County Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative Program. Essential resources—from uniforms, slip-resistant footwear, and cooking tools to stipends covering transportation, meals, ride-sharing services, and essential certifications through Ivy Tech—are thoughtfully provided.

Beyond tangible provisions, Cooking for Change symbolizes hope, solidarity, and a pivotal stride toward a promising future. It’s a beacon guiding individuals towards brighter horizons, fostering belief in the transformative power of opportunity and support.
